膨雀（ふくらすずめ）高校。県内有数の進学校。リゴリズムを徹底し、生徒の規律を第一とする。膨雀高校は完璧な学校でなければならなかった。大学全入時代に入って、学校では他の学校との差別化が難しくなっていた。進学率の高さはもちろん、エレガント、気品で膨雀高校はどの学校よりも抜きんでていた。
だが、それは決して自然とそうなったのではない。学内外関係者の一切の不祥事を始末する組織が秘密裏に存在していた。それが舎密（せいみ）部である。当局は万引き、窃盗の些細な不祥事から、死亡事故、殺人、失踪まであらゆる事件を警察組織に先んじて（いや、それはむしろ押さえ込んで）解決した。舎密部にはそれだけの権力があった。なぜそんな権力があるのか、それは一介の捜査員たちには知らないことだ。
舎密部警保局捜査第２課課長である主人公は１８歳にして学内の潜入捜査員として、普段はその年齢のものがそうであるように学校に通い、学内の些細な動きを見て取っては事件を未然に防止する任務をおっていた。
だが、或る秋に事件は起る。主人公はその捜査にのりだす。ここに物語が開始される・・・
主人公は物語を進行させる。その進行は犯罪という一つの真理に向かおうとする。だが、それに主人公は疑問を感じる。なぜ？　主人公はわからない。主人公は主人公自身にわからない自身の思考を有していた。主人公は事件の真相とそれに含まれる毒を認識し始める……

【ストーリー】

あの秋以前のいつか、ちまたではマスコミを賑わす不可解な事件が立て続けに起こっていた。スカイダイビングで自殺、小学生の女の子が教室で首吊り自殺。冬のプールで男子中学生溺死。二十歳の男性が通行人を襲い目を剔りだして重傷を負わせる。人々はそれをバロックシンドロームと呼んだ。舎密部警保局捜査２課課長はそういったマスコミのおもしろがらせを毛嫌いしていた。
そんなとき、膨雀高校の飼育小屋で飼っていた猫が殺されるという事件が起こる。舎密部警保局捜査２課課長は部下のタツヲと共に事件の捜査に乗り出す。
